The men that met iat the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia opposed the creation of a Direct Democracy, because they feared that it would lead to a tyranny of the majority.

They also  rejected the establishment of a Monarcgt because they feared that it would  lead to a tyranny of the minority

Instead they decided to create a limited demoracy that would be govern by the rule of law,

In a Direct Democracy decisions are made by the will of the majority, while in a Representative Democracy the decisions must not violate the rights of a minority.
