Contrary to what you've been taught the period known as Reconstruction began decades before the Civil War. Reconstruction began in earnest after John Quincy Adams was elected President in 1824.

That was when the Electoral College system created by the founding fathers was modified to change how we elect our President. Instead of relying of statesmen to choose our President, the states decided to allow the people to vote directly for the candidate of their choice.

With this direct election of senators and the changes made to the Electoral College our Constitutional Republic has  become a democracy run by ignorant and uniformed voters.

The men and women selected to serve in the House of Representatives should be chosen in direct elections, but the senators and the President should be chosen in indirect elections by a panel of men and women of integrity.

The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution states that any and all power not delegated to the government of the United States by the states is reserved to the states and to the people.  The Civil War was not fought to end slavery it was to strip the states of their sovereignty and turn the states into satellites a more powerful central government.
