For thousands of years slavery was considered to be a legitimate practice. This institution in the united States was planted in the Western Hemsphere thousands of years before the first African arrived in America.
For Incas, Aztecs, Iroquois, Comanchee, Cherokee and the the Seminoles all practiced the institution of slavery.The white Christians in the New World practived slavery for over 200 years before it was declared unconstitutional.
In the 1790's less than 10% of the adults living in the united States attended church on a regular basis. By the time Abraham Lincoln was elccted it is estimated that 35 to 40% of the adults living in the united state atended churxh regularly.
The Christian Pastors often taught their congregations that white people were God's chosen people and that they were superior to all other races.
The vast majority of the people in the 17th and 18th Century believed in the superiority of the white race and even Abraham Lincoln, "The Great Emancippator", believed in white supremacy,
