My Letter to the Editor

Florida qualified for statehood in 1845 when its population met the minimum requirement of 60,000. At that time Florida was assigned one Congressman and two senators.

Today. Florida has a population just under 21,781,121 and has 28 Congressional representatives. The census was established to count the number of inhabitants in every state every ten years  in order to guarantee that the number of representaties a state would have would grow every ten years at the same pace as its increase in  population.

If the people of Florida were as well represented today as they were in 1845 we would have approximately 363 Congressional Districts instead of 28.

The power of the people is directly proportional to the number of representatives a state has. When all political power is vested in the hands of just 435 career politicians who are working for the Wall Street corporations, We the People are easily exploited by the men and women we elect to preserve, protect and defend our lives, liberty and property. .
