In 1776 there were approximately 2.5 million people living in the 13 British Colonies in North America. Over 2 million were farmers that owned an average of 50 to 100 acres.

According to the 1860 U.S. Census, the government recorded thousands of large farms in the Southern United States. There were that employed a workforce of 100 or more enslaved people.

Historians generally classify "plantations" based on the number of enslaved people rather than total acreage, making exact land-size counts difficult. However, antebellum records show the South had more than 80 percent of the nation's farms of 1,000 acres or more in 1860. Most plantations spanned 500 to 1,000+ acres,

with large estates representing a small percentage of total Southern plantations.

In 1776, the 13 colonies had a total population of approximately 2.5 million people. Artisans and merchants ("mechanicks") formed the colonial middle class. Historians estimate these skilled workers and tradesmen made up about 10% to 18% of the populace—equating to roughly 250,000 to 450,000 artisans across all trades.
