Was America a great nation when black men and womem were forced to sit in the back of the bus? Was America better off when black people were second class citizens were were banned from playing in the Major League

Peonage, also called debt slavery or debt servitude, is a system where an employer compels a worker to pay off a debt with work. Legally, peonage was outlawed by Congress in 1867.

Thirteenth Amendment: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place . . .
