In the 1960 presidential election, John F. Kennedy won approximately 537 counties, while Richard Nixon won over 2,600 counties, according to historical election analysis. Despite losing the vast majority of counties geographically, Kennedy won the popular vote by 112,000 votes, largely by winning densely populated urban areas, notes The National Constitution Center. 

In the 2000 U.S. presidential election, George W. Bush won the popular vote in approximately 2,427 counties (or county equivalents) out of the roughly 3,111 in the nation.684 counties voted for Gore
