If Clarence Thomas had been a Liberal he would nver had been confirmed, 46 Democrat Senators voted against his confirmation while only 2 Republican Senators voted against his confirmation, He was confirmed by a  margin of 52 to 48. Confirmation should require a vote with a margin of two thirds.
