Westward Expansion

After the Treaty of Paris in 1783 England ceded approximately 236 million acres of land west of the Alleghany  Mountains and east of the Mississippi River to the United States., 

The question of how this land land would be divided among the 13 colonies was of   settled in the Land Ordinances of 1784, 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787,

It was decided the land would be set aside for the creation of entirely new states in the land west of the Alleghany Mountains and  east of the Missippi River,

As a resulut of the Northwest Ordinace the statesof Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan were created as well as a portion of Minnesota.

The Louisiana Purchase resulted in the creation of all or a portion of 15 States

The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo added  338.7 million acres of land to the United states which ultimately resulted in the crearion of all or a portion of 10 states.
