Making political decisions based on the popular will of the majority can prove disastrous. In Nazi Germany Hitler won the overwhelming support of the people by appealing to emotions rather than reason, 

In direct democratic elections the winning candidates are often chosen by a majority of ignorant and uninformed voters,  Should the opinion of a brain surgeon and a high school dropout count the same ?

In a republic a indirect election by a relatively small number of the wisest and most highly qualified individuals makes the decision for and in behalf of the people living in their Congressional District.

Members of the House of Representatives were to be selected in direct democratic elections by the people and the Senators were to be chosen in indirect elections by the state legislators.

The electoral college was created to guarantee that only the most well educated and informed men and women would have the right to vote in Presidential elections.

The authors of the Constitution feared that if the President were to be elected by a popular vote of the people the potential of a tyranny of the majority would exist.

Two of the Presidential electors should be chosen by the state legislature and the remaining electors should be chosen by the voters in each of the Congressional Districts,

This change would end the statewide popularity contests and the winner take all method of allocation electoral votes,
